Activities at Little Sam
Infant Room (6 weeks- approximately 12 months)
In the infant room, the environment is designed to provide a safe, calm space where babies can explore at their own pace. Teachers focus on building secure, trusting relationships. Low shelves hold sensory materials and simple toys to encourage early curiosity and motor development. Activities include sensory play, music, and opportunities for movement that support emerging physical skills.
Toddler Room (12 months - 2 years)
For toddlers, the Montessori classroom encourages independence and choice within a structured environment. Low furniture and child-sized tools allow them to participate in practical life activities like pouring, sweeping, and hand-washing. Toddlers are given language-rich experiences, with activities to build vocabulary, develop fine motor skills, and introduce early counting and sorting. Teachers observe closely to guide each child individually.
Two year old and preschool Rooms (2-4)
In the preschool area, the Montessori curriculum expands to include more complex practical life activities, such as food preparation and gardening, and introduces early math and literacy concepts. Children engage in activities that refine motor skills, like pouring, cutting, and transferring objects. They also explore sensory-based learning materials designed to build a concrete understanding of abstract concepts. Social skills are emphasized, as children practice sharing, taking turns, and collaborating with peers.
General Montessori Principles
Throughout all ages, the Montessori philosophy encourages self-paced, hands-on learning, where teachers act as guides rather than instructors. Materials are carefully chosen to be self-correcting and age-appropriate, and the classroom environment is designed to support the growth of independence, concentration, and a sense of order.
